I was only able to make it through 10% of the story, because it got to a point where Sam & Daniel witness a gang of 3 guys molesting a girl in an alleyway, and Daniel telling Sam to go call the cops while he "negotiated" with them.

Uh, Sam would NEVER leave Daniel in that situation; they ALWAYS back each other up. Plus, Sam's a better fighter than Daniel; that's CANON.

The author just wanted Daniel to get shot in the head so that Sam could visit him in a rehab facility to tell him that she was pregnant, and therefore increase the angst factor. That's when I stopped reading.
