*psst*

I do fanmixes like so:

http://www.spiletta.com/returnplaylist.html

Fans can stream the mix, but not access the mp3s to download them illegally -- the music itself is in a hidden folder, with the file names changed to meaningless numbers. In the meantime, each song has links to both amazon and iTunes, to encourage purchasing.

I think the rule most serious fanmix fans go by is this -- if you listen to it more than twice, you need to go buy the songs. Obviously that is a guideline enforced only by one's own honor, but it's one I for one obey.

How easy was it to implement the streaming player on your site? If there's a high learning curve involved, I understand why fanmixes are a low-tech (but not legal) way to share music.

I've often wondered why MP3 vendors haven't made it easier to share playlists/fanmixes via streaming audio players; it would certainly go a long way in reducing piracy and supporting our favorite musicians.

last.fm has an opt-in widget that integrates with LJ to link to whatever song someone enters into the "Current music:" field on an entry, but I've never bothered with it. Jango lets people share "channels" of favorite genres & artists, but not playlists.

It was fairly complex to set it up. Even once I tested and rejected a few pieces of software, it still required more than basic html to implement it. However, I'd be more than happy to share, now that the heavy lifting is done.

I now have six streaming mixes on my site, and they seem to get a fair bit of use, so someone must appreciate them.

Anyway, I think the really vital part is to make it easy for people to not pirate. The combination of streaming and links does that -- it's easy to listen without downloading anything, and should someone want the mix on their own iPod or what have you, it's also easy to click over to iTunes or Amazon and order the appropriate things.

That said, I know some people enjoy setting up their fanmixes so that the fanmix cover art shows when they play it, and I've kept a few downloaded fanmixes in tact myself for that reason, but I always make a point to buy the source as well. (In my case, on CD so I can add to the ridiculous CD shelf I built.) It really does come down to personal honor, in the end. If people really want to steal, they're going to find a way to do it.

I've Googled a bit to see if someone's come up with a 3rd party solution for embedding a playlist (such as the way YouTube allows embedded video) but so far:
http://www.playlist.com/forum/blog/topic/307240964/3 is still in Beta, and
http://mixtape.me/ doesn't seem to work.
