We dismiss the mentally ill and ostracize them socially.
We insult and belittle mental illness ("crazy", "batshit insane", "off her meds", "off his rocker") instead of holding out the hand of compassion or taking the time to listen.
We profit off industries that sell video games that encourage viewing living things as targets of violence, plus movies & TV shows that glorify BLASTIN' GATS.
We resort to hostility instead of sympathy.
We don't even say HI to our neighbors on a daily basis.
When was the last time you or I reached out with a simple smile to make a loner feel less lonely?
We fucking SUCK.

Date: 2012-12-14 09:39 pm (UTC)Well, I'm pretty sure you do, because I've seen your online behavior. You care and lead with your heart. I try too. It's easier on line than on the ground here, because in a rural area like this, loners aren't in the apartment next door, they are up a long driveway in a 20 acre parcel. It's hard to identify them as loners. Around here, folks say "Hi!" to anyone they see. Not all people answer back.
What we really need to do is have universal health care that covers mental health and not just standard medicine. Much of what my husband, an internist, deals with on a day to day basis is trying to get mental health services for people who cannot get access to it. The waiting lists for the indigent are enormous. Even the fairly well off, depending on their medical insurance can face huge hurdles in getting access to care.
Because my husband is a medical professional, employed by physician-run practice which provides excellent family insurance, we are well covered. My youngest two children have dual coverage from our family insurance and Vermont's Medicare program, because they have been adopted from foster care. So when my eldest daughter, who simply came with difficult biochemistry inherited from both sides, became suicidal, when my middle daughter had a disruption of attachment, followed by anorexia/bulimia, and my youngest has anger control issues from her ADHD, all of them were able to get access to mental health services as soon as the need was identified. I am severely disturbed to know that other people, with sons and daughters that are equally as suicidal as my daughter get told "we have your information, and here is your appointment, 6 weeks from now." This is WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! Their children are as precious and wonderful as my own.
But I don't think we suck. The system sure does though.
