Orrymain is like how Keira is to some people. You either love her fics or hate ‘em. There are even communities dedicated to bashing the poor woman and the dogs. Truthfully she’s not my cup of tea, but she has brought enjoyment to many and all praise to her for doing that.

This is what Stargate fans refer to when they say “Beagle fic”. It’s an AU where Jack quits the SGC to marry Daniel and raise 12 kids + 2 beagles + a bunch of other pets. They communicate telepathically and call each other “Babe” and “Angel”. Required reading is the story where Jack sings “Rubber Ducky” and inserts one into Daniel while they’re in the bathtub. I am not making this up.
SCREEN GRAB OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN:

They see me trollin, they hatin...

Date: 2011-03-03 12:21 am (UTC)My own philosophy about those fics is of the "move the curser away from the fic title, and nobody needs the brain bleach" variety.
I had to send out for a whole new brain and start over after unsuspectingly reading one for the first time, though.

Date: 2011-03-03 12:49 am (UTC)So sorry about the need for a new brain. (((hug)))

Date: 2011-03-03 03:57 am (UTC)When I went to Bryn Mawr College (single sex, all women), we had the option of living and taking classes at Haverford College (at that time single sex, all men) a mile down the road. There was an active and well-respected Gay Alliance group in the bi-college community, well known for throwing the best parties on campus. There were quite a reasonable number of openly gay men and a smaller number who were bi (or who admitted to being so at that stage of their lives). While I was there one of the men was in the initial stages of seeking to become transgendered. Now some of those individuals fit some stereotypes, but none of them fit all of them, and most of them were pretty average guys.
What kind of alien device could Jack and Daniel have wandered into that would turn them from the Jack and Daniel that showed up on our screens, and turn them into sentimental aunties of the hearts and flowers sort?
*wibbles*

Date: 2011-03-03 05:48 am (UTC)Eeeeeewwwww! Just eeeeeewwwww!
At the point I'd run into the one and only one I'd read I'd only seen the feature film and a small fraction of the series (Secrets, Nemesis, and all of Seasons 4 and 1), but even if I'd only seen the feature film, I'd have known that their relationship was much more layered and nuanced than that!
And yes, I'm sure there are auntie types who act like that, but that's not Jack and Daniel. The real Jack and Daniel spend a fair amount of time sticking the knife in and twisting between quiet acts of enormous tact and consideration. The real Jack and Daniel disagree early and often and then turn as one to face the foe. It is the complexity and ever-shifting nature of both the tension and the bond between them that makes their relationship worth following.
I think what is really so disturbing is that the fics read like the puerile monodimensional wish-fulfillment laden first writing attempts of a young teen, but are cranked out year after year unchangingly (or so the synopses lead me to believe - as I said, I've only subjected myself to the one).
(no subject)
Date: 2011-03-03 08:17 am (UTC)THIS. It's precisely this dynamic that make Jack & Daniel so compelling onscreen; when fanfic authors capture those fireworks in genfic, het, or slash, it's truly glorious.
puerile monodimensional wish-fulfillment laden first writing attempts of a young teen, but are cranked out year after year unchangingly
SO THIS. It's tragic that the stories just don't improve over time, but continue to pander to a naive audience that demands cardboard characterization and palaver. Lowest common denominator prevails. :(

Date: 2011-03-03 05:23 am (UTC)I remember feeling so punked when I read the rose petals fic. The grammar & punctuation were good, the sentence structure and vocabulary were decent, but as the story progressed... the characters -- WHO WERE THEY? Where did Jack & Daniel go?
When did the bromance turn into a Hallmark card knockoff?

Date: 2011-03-03 10:31 am (UTC)What Must Occur
"Though he had no love, like, or even tolerance for the crude and rude woman named Vala Mal Doran, Jack had to put aside his personal feelings and consider what was best for Earth's survival."
http://squidge.org/peja/cgi-bin/viewstory.php?sid=47384
She's also happy leaving rambling, alarmingly misogynistic reviews of Seasons 9 & 10:
Stargate Sg-1: Crusade
"Vala is the number one reason for the show's decline."
http://www.bukisa.com/articles/397638_stargate-sg-1-crusade
The Ties That Bind
"The problem is that watching Claudia Black as that vulgar tramp, Vala mal Doran is not adorable; no, it's disgusting."
http://www.bukisa.com/articles/420340_stargate-sg-1-the-ties-that-bind
Bad Guys
"Well, it's a show that includes both Ben Browder as the Jack clone, Cameron Mitchell, and Claudia Black as the tramp in SG clothing, Vala Mal Doran."
http://www.bukisa.com/articles/401283_stargate-sg-1-bad-guys
"Stargate SG-1: The Ark of Truth is a winner and comes highly recommended by somewho who hates the Vala character."
http://www.reviewstream.com/reviews/?p=39467
BIG SAD FACE. I love ALL the Stargate characters -- even Jonas. Woolsey, Kinsey & Maybourne, too. Antagonists are catalysts; without them, a story risks stagnation.
(no subject)
Date: 2011-03-03 10:51 am (UTC)I personally don't like Jonas, but I wouldn't blame the show's demise on him, not that it did, er, demise.
(no subject)
Date: 2011-03-03 10:56 am (UTC)Now I don't feel so sad for taking a stand for Vala and for representing Jack & Daniel with more authenticity.

Date: 2011-03-03 11:22 am (UTC)I'd never be sad for championing Vala and the boys. That's being a good fan!

Date: 2011-03-03 09:08 am (UTC)I do have to admit, I was a Sesame Street kid and heavily associate the rubber ducky song with Bert & Ernie as Ernie would sing it while in the tub, Bert probably tidying up around him being 'the anal one'. So Beagle fic pretty much ruined *my* childhood right there... :P
