My grandfather's New York firm assigned him to Hawaii when he was starting out with them in the 1930's. My mother was conceived their, but they had returned to New York by the time she was born. My grandmother had picked up a fair number of Hawaiian words during her stay there and used some of them regularly with my mom. In particular she would have my toddler mom cuddling in her lap, and would play naming the parts: "This is your nose, this is your hand, this is your foot, and this [tickle] is your big opu!"

My mom was shocked!, shocked! to head off to kindergarden and learn that the rest of her class had no clue what an opu was!

This illustrates one of the best reasons to teach kids multiple languages at a young age. :D

Well, my mom grew up to become a Classics professor, and knows Ancient and Modern Greek, Latin, French, German, and Arabic well, and some Italian, Spanish, and (obviously) a smattering of Hawaiian.

We take language aquisition seriously in our family!

When my son was 6 months old or so, I happened to watch a kiddie program for learning French on our local PBS station as I folded the laundry. When he woke up, I unthinkingly addressed him in French.

His eyes got big. His little lip thrust out and wobbled. He broke into sobs. Mom was broken!

I quickly shifted back to English, and he soon calmed down.

Still, it's his older sister who majored in Russian at college. He can speak French, read Latin, and recently learned some Italian so he could study in Rome for a while, but he's learning more computer languages these days for his Computer Science major.

That's wonderful!

I flail around in my native English, pretend to understand the French I learned in 4 years of school, and can smile & nod in Spanish, German, Latin, and Thai. ;p
