Whoa. I just read "Will Dean Devlin Get the Stargate Reboot?" at Stargate Solutions. There's a link to "Producer Dean Devlin Talks INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequels, STARGATE Movie Sequels, GODZILLA and More at the Saturn Awards" on Collider where he says "films would continue the story with the original film cast and focus on other places Stargates could go and other places Stargates might be on planet Earth."

That's TWO sequels -- parts 2 & 3 -- to the 1994 Stargate movie, with Kurt Russell & James Spader -- and hopefully Mili Avital, Alexis Cruz, French Stewart, & John Diehl. Viveca Lindfors has passed away, but learning something different of Catherine Langford's fate would be awesome. And holy crap, the geeks Barbara Shore, played by Rae Allen, and Gary Meyers, played by Richard Kind, would they be in it, too?
Sha'uri kisses Daniel

Yeah, I know, Sam, Teal'c, Vala & Cam wouldn't exist, as well as everyone in Atlantis (SAD FACE) but the Alternate Realities of this prospect I CAN'T EVEN. I adore Avital's Sha'uri. And if Russell & Spader are in it, that's enough time for Jack & Sarah O'Neil (one L) to reconcile and have more kids, as well as Daniel & Sha'uri to... Heh. Baby fic. LOL

But man, a Stargate Alternate Reality where:
  • aliens DON'T speak English
  • Goa'uld don't incubate in stomach pouches
  • something besides a DHD dials a 'Gate
I would totally watch that.

And then write the fuck out of some fanfic where a Ripple Effect makes the realities collide with the teams we know. ;p

I would love to see this version of the franchise expanded in the wake of the television show's demise. It would be interesting to see where they take it as Independence Day was the second Stargate's script, altered into an entirely new movie.

Getting Kurt Russell and James Spader back would be wicked cool. :D

Devlin has said often over the years that he would love to do a Stargate reboot. Whether that works for a theatrical release would depend on a great many factors: availability of Russell and Spader because you simply CANNOT do Stargate without Jack and Daniel, the state of the movie industry, the success of the current spate of superhero flicks. and last but certainly not least, money.

Personally, not all that excited about the possibility because I'm not totally convinced it has any realistic chance of happening. Would I go to the theater to watch it? I'd really have to think about it. I'm more invested in the TV version, of the Jack and Daniel that I love. They'd have to offer me something really, really wonderful to get me on board.

Oh, yeah. I doubt Sara/Jack would be a sufficient substitute for Sam/Jack 'shippers.

Sah'uri/Daniel was my very first Stargate 'ship, but the Jack/Daniel tension at the end of the 1994 movie was palpable.

Uh, hi, I'm a Sam/Jack fan from back in the day, and it's not killing me. For that matter, it's not going to kill all the Sam/Jack fans either. There are plenty of Sam/Jack fans who aren't unreasonable about the pairing.

True.

There are plenty of Jack/Daniel fans who are unreasonable about their OTP, to the point that I hit the Back button on 50% of the J/D fic I halfway-read because something triggers my rage: bashing Sam, Sara, Sarah, Sha're, Vala, Cam, Paul Davis, or any character that threatens the "perfect" bubble of retro-active monogamy.

I've run into some bad Sam/Jack fans too (er, more than a few), I have to confess, but the automatic assumption/implication that all the Sam/Jack fans will flip their shit got under my skin.

I think that Jack and Daniel have a special connection, and Sam/Jack fic that tries to deny it is uncool, as is Jack/Daniel fic that would try to deny that Sam and Jack have a special connection. As do Sam and Daniel. And Teal'c has his own unique bond with each member of the team. Which basically is my long-winded way of saying that no one's OTP should ever, imo, erase connections between the other characters. Tl;dr: I agree.

LOL, not long enough to be TL;DR!

The Jack/Daniel stories I've come across that even entertain the notion that Sam/Jack is a necessary component of Jack's sexuality, I can count on ONE HAND. And that's freakin' sad.

Sometimes I feel like even the multi-shippers on my F-List prefer to compartmentalize pairings instead of exploring how the implicit bisexuality of characters to make slash plausible creates stories all the more interesting. And a lot hotter.

Stargate without Vala doesn't particularly appeal -- I loved the first eight seasons, but the awesome that is Vala outshines them now. However, a version of history where Sha'uri gets to be awesome instead of the manpain victim, well I can't exactly say no to that plan. So I'll watch them, but only if that is what I'm offered. Watching a different version of her rescue, even a successful one, wouldn't inspire me to forget about Vala, Sam, and Teal'c, even for just long enough to enjoy a movie.

EXACTLY this.

If I can't have Vala, I'll take Sha'uri.

My big fear is that a Devlin/Emmerich screenplay would fail to cast enough women.

Agreed. I don't want to watch a movie about men blowing stuff up. I wanna watch a movie about women blowing stuff up. This is important. (Actually, I have a fairly high tolerance for movies about men blowing stuff up, because I really like explosions, but I expect more from Stargate).

My feelings, they are conflicted. I mean, don't get me wrong: the original movie's totally rad and I've played the SNES game, I've played it.

But what am I supposed to do without Sam?

As for S/J, I think I'd survive, thank you very much. ;)

Now that I think about it, Sha'uri got to be totally badass in the video game. She's off leading the friggin' rebellion and meanwhile one of Daniel's exact lines, I kid you not, is, "I think I'm dying." 8U at its finest.

A 3D computer-animated Stargate reboot with the original actors voicing the parts... you know MGM would seriously consider it, especially for the video game marketing potential.

TBH I would LOVE for this to happen. If nothing else, to keep the Stargate 'verse alive. Be it AU or whatever.

And like many wise people here already said - the chance to see Shau'ri being badass is so totally worth it! :D They could also add another female part to the movie/team as well. Daniel/Shau'ri(Sha're) was my first SG ship too. ♥

Plus, it's exciting to see what kind of a twist or plot or story Devlin/Emmerich could come up with for the stargates and where they come from and why and all that.

I basically love everything that enriches the fandom and the fics and keeps it all alive. :D

IMO all that would make me get over the whole our-team-not-being-there.

But LOL at Devlin saying "films would continue the story with the original film cast and focus on other places Stargates could go and other places Stargates might be on planet Earth." like it's news or something. :D Bless. :D

I kinda wish that Devlin & Emmerich had been involved in the production of the TV series -- there's the chance that Sha'uri wouldn't have been put in a refrigerator.

When I listen the the DVD commentary for the 1994 movie, Devlin made a point to mention how they weren't included in it. In the CotG DVD commentary, Brad Wright mentions how he & Jonathan Glassner came up with a TV series idea separately, and then pitched it to MGM.

I can't even begin to speculate about the politics behind how intellectual property rights & contracts make things happen to the dysfunctional degree that they do in Hollywood.

Right! Like, when I watch the film, I remember how I thought Sha'uri was going to be a bad stereotype, and then she's suddenly the leader of the entire motherfucking rebellion. (The boys were the catalyst, sure, but the rebellion was organized and brought about by Sha'uri and Skaara.)

I would really like to see what they'd come up with, and, honestly. I think I'm glad I don't know much about IP rights and contracts, because I'd bet they're inherently manipulable, and that would make me kind of-- I don't know, more disillusioned than I already am?

Yep, disillusion is one way to express it.

Corporate greed & IP laws have stunted our cultural development. We no longer have an "oral history" or a guiding mythos; we have media tie-ins and "consumable product".
