There've been very interesting further developments in that: it seems that the authors in question may have been stretching a point or several, with a high probability of excessive self-interest and an attempt at plausible deniability.

The good news is that most of the discussion is pushing aside the "Who lied?" quesrtion and choosing to focus on "How can we get more YA published with non-mainstream lead characters?"
