Yeah, I'm so wrecked that I wanna start a "Cast Vala in the 3rd SG-1 Movie" campaign.

Understandably, Wright wants to feature Richard Dean Anderson -- it's only fair; RDA helped build the franchise. But it also seems endemic of Writer Flail: "We don't know what lines to give Vala since she gets the sarcasm when Jack's not around."

I mean, come on: Jack and Vala going head-to-head in a snark-off? How much win would that be? And Daniel getting caught in the middle while Sam gives Jack the Doe-Eyes of Death, Teal'c nods in amusement, and Mitchell winces in a mixture of fanboi awe and fear? (Not to mention the threesome possibilities it would inspire for fanfic writers.)

I've also read that it might try to tie-in threads from Stargate Universe, to give that series a boost. But still... Claudia Black's acting skills are immense, and not including her is total FAIL.

I keep anticipating that the 3rd movie will have lots of Jack, lots of fighter jets, lots of explosions, a Supergate, Ancient genes, and Jack & Daniel tossing the Ring into Mount Doom and declaring their undying fellowship. Not that that's bad -- cuz I like slash, too.

But maybe the character arcs of Sam, Teal'c, and Cam will advance enough to make me OK with a casual Vala write-off such as "How's the leg Vala broke on your skiing honeymoon in Aspen, Daniel?"

It sorta seems like Brad Wright treating Vala like Butters in South Park, or Monica Reyes in The X-Files.

Maybe he can't wrap his head around how she expands the fellowship paradigm beyond being only a "love interest" for Daniel. She's much, much more than a Jump the Shark device.

1. I forgot to say in my first post: very clever snippet. (My brain often works independently from my intentions.)


2. There are definitely parallels between Monica/Vala and their character usage. Sad, really.

I love the character of Vala, which probably partly stems from the fact that I love Claudia Black. I found Vala quirky and refreshing and entertaining, but I can see why some fans did not like her. Her silliness, I think that word works well enough, was often over-written (that ridiculous blowdryer bit in The Quest) and while one might wonder if the intention had been that her character used her behavior to hide behind, it was not developed or explained properly. Imho.

Hell yeah, who can't love Claudia Black? Her voice is a spoonful of wonderful dipped in dark chocolate.

The character arc the writers gave Vala (ass-kicking space pirate to silly sex kitten) was kinda unexpected, as though they were afraid of making her too strong or too capable. She had to hold her own as a member of SG-1, with a team who had saved the galaxy multiple times, and I guess she acted silly in order to get other to underestimate her. ? Why, I'm not sure yet. I actually haven't seen/read all the transcripts of Seasons 9 & 10, and am waiting for my b-day in a few weeks to get the complete series on DVD.

But I read somewhere that Claudia asked not to be in the 3rd film, because she's pursuing other projects. (and now, of course, I can't find the reference for that quote at all. >.< Murphey's law.).

It's a damn shame though. Vala is such a terrific character!! And Claudia is just such a magnificent actress. She just lights up anything she's in!

Stargate Wiki says Ben Browder might not be in it either. So maybe it's intended as an "original team" movie?
