campylobacter: Geek Sexy Daniel (geek-sexy)
[personal profile] campylobacter
Last year while I was writing "Bookends", I asked [livejournal.com profile] cleothemuse  "What kind of car does Daniel drive?" She listed several options: the Land Rover he rented in Cairo, a Jeep, or Jack's truck, which Jack might've left when he moved to DC. I chose Jack's truck. I was just over at [livejournal.com profile] lc59's Colour Meme, and she's given Vala a 1965 Mustang Shelby Fastback.

So canonically, what kind of vehicles do Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, Cameron Mitchell, and Daniel Jackson drive?

Do Teal'c and Vala drive cars?

[Michael Shanks at Fan Odyssey Culver City, California, 5-8 June, 2003]
Audience Member: "What kind of car does Daniel drive?"

Michael Shanks: "That's a very interesting question. In fact that was brought up as background on the two-parter that we're doing, "Heroes". We've never seen Daniel in a vehicle except for maybe a taxi cab or getting dropped off by a military car or the Egypt thing (in "The Curse"), but we also thought that that would be a great thing to fill in because we've already seen what kind of car the others drive. And the type of car he drives sort of shows where his mind set is. He drives... he would drive... something circa 1940's, an old clunker, you know not anything new, so they found an old revamped 1950's military vehicle because he's not a new car or motorcycle type, but more a military vehicle type. (Like the Land Rover? The audience refers to the one in "The Curse".) Yeah, like that."

I think I've identified Daniel's car from that pic... that looks like a 1948-1950 Jeep VJ:

Oh hell, I just lost $5! I've had this bet with my sister for years about what that car was! She said it was a Jeep - but I always pictured a Jeep as more of a Wranger style body (neither of us knows squat about American cars :p).

That is a gorgeous car.

That's 'cause this is a "civilian" Jeep model instead of a "military" model ;)

What's scary is that I'm sure the writers spent more time discussing what cars the characters drove than the fans do.

You two rock for both finding the car and identifying it respectively! I never noticed that before...

And that IS such a Daniel car! *nods*

Isn't it though? A well-preserved artifact, both practical and functional... and because they didn't have anything but manual transmissions on AMCs/Jeeps back then, operation requires application of esoteric knowledge.

Yep, that's a Daniel car.

Man oh man I'm missing my old Honda Civic's stick shift even more when I imagine Daniel stepping on that clutch and deftly shifting into 2nd gear.

If you're after the rest of the actor's cars like CJ's Hummer, that Volvo is Amanda's own car, RDA drives an old Audi and Shanks drives a Prius.

Holy crap, your car knowledge of SG-1 is thorough!

Now I'm in deep. ;-) Thanks for the info! I'll be updating it late tonight after work's all done. :-D

I agree! I'm lucky and honored that Mags and Cleo are on my FList. Writing fanfic shouldn't be a solitary hobby since collaboration brings to light such great bits of canon.

Cool car, but I'm not sure...in the late 80-early 90s when he might have bought it, it would've been called a 'classic' and given his finances at that time I doubt he could've afforded it....unless he got it almost completely free because it was in such bad shape...in which case it wouldn't look as good as the picture, lol.
Since the time of that episode he's probably moved on since he can afford something better...but he's probably still gone with a Jeep or Land Rover...something more basic and functional than anything else.

I'm going with the theory that Daniel had a crappy used something (Peugeot? LOL) until he could afford something more reliable, OR that his grandfather gave him his parents' old vintage vehicle when Nick stopped driving.

I think Daniel's not the type to spend real $$ on a new car, unless it's something "socially responsible" as Cleo says. His disposable income probably goes toward books & artifacts instead of an onerous car payment.

Seconding campy's comment here. This picture is post-descension, so any car he might have had before ascending might have long-since been sold (or it was an heirloom that was put into storage because Jack et. al. refused to believe he wouldn't be back for it later).

yes...post-ascension...an interesting point. Would he buy something just because it was what his parents drove...regardless of the price because it had been restored?

You are full of WIN! Thank you! I've edited the entry per yours and Mags's research.

(BTW, doing picspams in LJ is freakin' clunky and slow.)

Sorry that I'd forgot to mention the hybrid SUVs. The thought of Daniel with his hands on a steering wheel or a stick shift is making me a bit giddy.
