Hey, I had a brochure of theirs, "gifted" to me when I was caught with Valley of Horses or Lady Chatterley's Lover or some other ridiculously tame book. Ironically, the person so concerned about my filthy reading habits turned out to own an extensive collection of furry porn.

Except some people do have a very REAL problem, it's like an addiction. And I'm not talking a fun chocolate style addiction but more like drugs and alcohol. When something takes over your life to the point that nothing else matters, then yeah, there's a problem.

I don't know anything about this center, but I have seen what serious addiction (of any kind) can do to someone/families up close and personal. So, yeah, I'm a little sensitive about certain things...

Frist off the statistics in this ad are made up. Seriously, no way that porn is ruining that many marriages.

Bad parental supervision of the Internet allows for predaors to take advantage of our kids. NOt pornography. NO one in a porn film every tried to contact my kids.

Pornography, like anything, can be addictive. I am sure it ruins relationsihps and that people can become compulsive about it.

However, Campy was joking around and so was I in my original comment.

I like porn. My husband likes porn. I read porn. I write porn. I am a spiritual person who hsa rad all major religious texts and adhere to what one might call Christian mysticism. I also love sex. I didn't always but I have grown into a woman who celebrates the gift of my sesuality. I have been and will be faithful to my husband until the day I die.

A wise man once said that the state has no buisness in the bedrooms of the nation. I also don't think any religion should be in our bedrooms either. Consenting adults can do what they please in a free society.

I know that upsets some people but the question I always want to ask is, why do they care? No laws are being broken if a person likes porn.

LIking porn is not depraved and neither is it addictive if an underlying pathology isn't there. Far more people's marriages are ruined by alcohol.

This ad uses false statistics and religious images to demonize adult media and all but says, "Sinners...come let us save you."

As a Christian, I am offended when adult media is equated with being a pedophile or evil doers.

What yanks my chain about the Beacon Center ad is that they're mixing apples with oranges: combining anti-pornography propaganda with a "public service announcement" for porn addiction counseling. Talk about *creating* an affliction AND a market for one's counseling service.

Underlying all that is the fallacy of condemning an object for the abuse of that object. By the same faulty logic, LET'S BAN GUNS BECAUSE THEY KILL PEOPLE.

LET'S PROHIBIT ALCOHOL BECAUSE IT KILLS PEOPLE.

LET'S BAN PORN BECAUSE A KID WILL WATCH IT AND HIS PARENTS WILL GET DIVORCED.

Why isn't that energy expended toward eradicating the type of porn that DOES cause suffering: Child Pornography? Because seriously, consenting adults boinking each other on camera is healthy & natural compared to coercing/molesting/raping a child.

LET'S BAN GUNS BECAUSE THEY KILL PEOPLE.

Yes! I've long said it. A gun is an inaminate object. If it's sitting in my father-in-law's gun cabinet, it cannot do anything to me or anyone else. People use guns to kill people. And if they don't use guns, they've a wealth of other methods. Will we ban knives next? How will we carve the Thanksgiving turkey in that case?

I think I said everything else in my long response below...

Okay, so I actually watched the vid. Talk about a confusing message. And very OTT. The whole predator thing should have been put in a separate message and not in one where they also raised stats about marriage and family.

I did realise that the two of you were joking around. I'm not that big of a frowny-face *g* I may pretty much be a conservative Christian, but even I can tell that this promo is not a great advertisement for Christianity.

So here's my take. My favourite two texts are the Bible and the US Constitution. I had to study the Constitution as part of my naturalization process, and ended up with more than 1 copy of it as a result.

I'll start with the Bible first, and here I'll work with the New Testament. The OT is very legalistic and part of it has been made irrelevant due to Jesus' birth, death, and resurrection. (Although Song of Songs is extremely interesting!)

I think enjoyment of porn and sex come down to two different things. Do we enjoy the act (be it self and spouse, watching or reading), or are we lusting after the subject (such as a photographic model)? I don't think there's much about the act in the Bible, except that it should be with a spouse. The lusting after someone is a different matter. "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matthew 5:28) I'm a territorial woman, I don't want my husband lusting after another woman. To me, it would be a betrayal. So when Jesus says hey, lust is as good as adultery I'm going, Amen! But does God think sex as a whole is bad. No, He created it for us. There's a reason men and women are made a certain way and fit together to become one. God just happens to think we should only have sex with our lifetime spouse. (Again, Song of Songs) So I'm definitely not against sex, but I really don't like the lusting after someone else bit.

Now, when it comes to the Constitution and American law, I understand porn is legal for consenting adults. Just like alcohol is legal. And it's illegal to sell it to kids. But I believe adults are fairly mature and can make decent choices. Prohibition didn't work in the 1920s and banning crack, heroine etc., isn't solving the drug problem now. If people want it, they'll find a way to get it. It's about the individual and their decision-making. (Which that promo certainly doesn't help with!) I believe in the 1st Amendment that gives us freedom of speech and freedom of the media. I don't like a lot of things that are said (Do not get me started on Westboro Baptist church, for example!), but Americans have a right to say them.

When it comes to [livejournal.com profile] daniel_vala, I believe that if people want to create and post adult material, they can. It's up to the individual whether or not they want to click the link to access it. Personally, I don't access a lot of it. That's not to say I've never written or read adult fanfiction. There are some dubious Star Trek Voyager pieces written by me still floating around on the internets somewhere! Anyway, as an adult, I can make the decision whether or not to click the link. It's one of the reasons I asked Campy to be a co-mod; she has no fear in clicking those links ;) Ideally, I'd prefer under 18s not to click the links, but I know some of them are going to anyway. I just want the community to have its backsides covered. So long as we state the link leads to adult material then I think we're good.

Wow, this is long. But as a conservative Christian, I wanted to explain my feelings. It looked like Beacon was a place you could attend voluntarily, if you realised you had a problem with pornography. But, going by that promo alone, their message was completely confused. As a result, non-Christians could come away with a very negative image of the Christian faith.

Now I'm going to shove off of Campy's page before she scolds me soundly for it! I'll just finish with that dubious stat of 50% of marriages failing due to porn. Sadly, I've seen a lot of marriages end. None of them have been due to porn. Alcohol, adultery, and abuse are the main reasons.

Mr. Campy knows I flirt/Tweet online with a porn star (http://twitter.com/amiamiley) and lust after the actors/actresses of The X-Files & Stargate. I suspect that's why we've been happy together for 13 years. ;D

non-Christians could come away with a very negative image of the Christian faith
I enjoy it when moderate & liberal Christians speak openly against fundamentalist rhetoric, conservative literalism, and radical extremism (such as the WBC).

Pshaw! As if I'm ever gonna object to my very diverse F-List practicing the vocabulary of rational debate on my LJ? The more people discuss religion & politics, the closer we get to world peace.

Score 1 for Christians who love porn! I agree - and find myself in a very similar boat!
