OMG the fanboy comments on reddit, y'all. KML
"I'd go gay for Michael Shanks." "He's all up in Dr. Lam."
"And when they show the city where the O'Neill departs from before Sam blows it up? As an architecture student, that city still gives me erections to this day. The bottom line is the Asgard are the shit."
"The Ori only used belief to enhance their power. Without belief and worship, they were still pretty damn powerful. Freddy Kreuger virtually relied on it."
"MACGYVER?!!?!?"
"...if ever there was a true god in this universe, it was Hammond of Texas. Mr. motherfuckin' Clean himself. Babyhead Hammond. First of his Name. Lord of Undermountain. Omega Cue-ball. There is none higher."
"hillary clinton, mit romney, elijah wood and samuel jackson in....?"

Date: 2012-01-15 08:40 am (UTC)MacGyver slept with a nun, that makes him almost catholic... *g*
she wasn't a nun at the time, but whatever :P(no subject)
Date: 2012-01-15 08:47 am (UTC)Mac tapped a sister? bwahahaha
RDA would have a little issue at being compared to Mitt Romney (https://twitter.com/#!/andersonrdean/status/157646489886273538).

Date: 2012-01-15 09:07 am (UTC)Jack is unknown, he joked once about listening to the bible on tape (which is a Simpsons reference) and in The Shroud stated that he doesn't believe anything anyone tells him anymore, whether that extends to religious belief in general or Daniel's situation only, well it can be taken a few ways, nothing certain.
Sam's dog tags say she is Catholic and then in Line in the Sand while dying she says she hopes one of those gods out there might be able to help her out - whether that is fear talking or supernatural belief (the two often go hand in hand), can't say for certain.
Daniel up until Pegasus Project had some semblance of faith in the Ancients helping humanity in its darkest hour in some fashion, unsure if there could be classed as a religious belief though.
Teal'c as with Bra'tak sort of worshipped the Ancients I suppose, because they were the path to ascension (Maternal Instinct) which was a goal for the free Jaffa.
Cam comes from a religious family, but unsure if he himself is practising.
Vala is probably jaded by the whole thing, again, who knows.
I kinda like the ambiguity with regard to the character's personal beliefs, it also avoids getting into that messy grey area about pushing one set of beliefs on another which in part defines them further from the Goa'uld/Ori etc.

One of Mac's many girlfriends left him to become a nun, he then saved some kids with her and got all the feelings again, poor thing. Not sure if he is religious either as he worked with churches and secular organisations, I think his mother was Catholic though.
RDA when he is comprehensible on Twitter is love. <3

Date: 2012-01-15 09:23 am (UTC)I too like the ambiguity of the characters' religious/spiritual beliefs in the show, but it's plain that IF any of them follow a faith, that they're not fundamentalists, evangelicals, or exclusivists; they'd unequivocally fall into the liberal, inclusivist and somewhat universalist end of the spectrum.
MacGyver sounds like he has some serious issues with women.

Date: 2012-01-15 09:40 am (UTC)I always found Teal'c's quote there rather amusing. Did he not read the old testament first? That is some sadistic shit right there.
I agree with you re the character's religious/non religious beliefs, and that would have to be their position given the uber-right Kinsey was one of their earliest foils.

And therein lies one of the main elements of the series... you know, aside from MacGyverisms, the cold war, street kids & past life western flash backs. :P

Yeah, it's horrifying (http://rarebible.wordpress.com/2009/06/07/rape-circumcision-and-mass-murder/). (Although I disagree that Dinah was raped; I suspect that she & Shechem were in love, owing to the scripture's glaring omission of her opinion on the whole disaster.)

Date: 2012-01-15 04:32 pm (UTC)In the first season, they ran a James Bond riff: they gave him a kick-ass Girl of the Week. On-camera kissing and off-camera screwing, usually initiated by the woman.
After that, the Girl of the Week was usually an Unattainable, and the off-camera screwing was replaced with UST. (I thought it was a shame, myself.) A ridiculous trope built up over too many years of MacGyver's Ex-Girlfriend Needs Help, until you wondered how he'd managed to do anything else in his life with all these ex-girlfriends.
Basically, the sex life was a mirror of RDA's own at the time: single, straight, more or less serially monogamous, short-term relationships only, pre-AIDS, consensual. It leaves very fertile ground for writing smut, since you don't have to worry about permanence. Unless, of course, you have a hang-up about a hero who sleeps around. ;-)

Nothing but high-fives from me regarding heroes (or heroines!!!) who sleep around.

Date: 2012-01-15 06:40 pm (UTC)Ha! That's it in a nutshell. Apparently the only one of RDA's exes with a bad attitude about it is Teri Hatcher. As for Mac's exes, most of them turn up when they need help, so they don't seem to be too upset either.
It gets pretty ridiculous, though, when I run into MacGyver fans who think every Good Guy must have One True Love. You can imagine the gawdawful Mary Sue fic that results from that approach.

Date: 2012-01-15 09:42 pm (UTC)Poor Mac and all those exes, I think the only time we saw him get a girlfriend was Deborah,...and then she tried to murder him. :P
Oh, and Maria was probably the longest relationship we saw on screen?
